As Scottsdale, Arizona-based multifamily firm MC Cos. plans to accelerate the growth of its multifamily portfolio, it has brought on Jim Cowan to join its corporate team as its new director of capital markets.
In his new role, Cowan will be responsible for developing and executing strategies for raising capital from investors, including pension funds, endowments, foundations, private equity and individuals. He will also play a role in creating and managing fundraising campaigns, marketing materials and presentations, as well as maintaining relationships with investors.
Cowan brings more than 30 years of real estate investment experience to MC Cos. — including 23 years as managing director and senior investment manager for North American-listed real estate securities at New York City-based investor Morgan Stanley Properties. Before Morgan Stanley, he held roles at New York City-based real estate investment company Capital Trust and New York city-based Tower Realty Trust, where he played a role in taking the company public.

“Jim’s extensive background in investment strategy and risk management makes him an invaluable asset to our team,” said Charlie Koznick, chief investment officer at MC Cos., in the release. “We are thrilled to have him on board as we continue to expand and enhance our portfolio.”
Cowan is also a business fellow for the DiLella Center for Real Estate at Villanova University, and serves as chairman of the Rights of Passage Program Board for Covenant House New Jersey, an organization that provides transitional housing and services for homeless youth.
MC Cos. intends to acquire existing operating properties and build more from the ground up in order to expand its holdings, according to the release. The company currently owns and operates 7,000 units across 28 properties in major metropolitan markets in Arizona, Texas and Nevada, and has an additional 1,260 units in development.
