The design philosophy of the shared spaces at The Ivy in Chatham, New Jersey, stems from the 245-unit property’s namesake and the way in which the climbing plant interacts with its surroundings.
“The way ivy softens its surroundings to create a complimentary composition served as inspiration for the interiors,” said Josh Kassing, senior vice president of Chicago-based Mary Cook Associates, which handled furniture, fixtures and equipment for the property in cooperation with the interior designer, Miami-based ID & Design International.
In keeping with the nature-inspired theme, the property’s overall color palette leans toward earthy tones, with a mix of warm golden browns and blues. Slim, clean lines are a uniting feature in the shared spaces’ furniture, including a decorative wooden screen that extends from the lobby ceiling.
“The furniture, fixtures and equipment were selected with a dichotomy in mind: refined sophistication and a nature-inspired palette,” said Jonathan Schwartz, partner at the project’s developer, Livingston, New Jersey-based developer BNE Real Estate Group. “It’s a combination that evokes a sense of comfort and home.”
The corner site gives the building a roughly trapezoidal shape, and the exterior, designed by Newark-based Minno & Wasko Architects and Planners, combines classic light brick and white molding with modern-style black window frames. A pair of immense bay windows and a glass-front entrance flood the lobby with natural light.

The property’s one- and two-bedroom units offer ceilings up to 11-feet high, plank flooring, stainless steel appliances and wine refrigerators, among other features. Select units have additional den space.
Over 34,000 square feet of amenities include a coworking lounge with private offices, a coffee bar and smart vending cafe, a fitness center, a private dining room and catering kitchen, a screening room, a game lounge, multi-sport simulators, a children’s playroom and a pet spa. Outside, a pool, capanas, fire pits, dining areas and a covered outdoor lounge are located across three courtyards. A 24/7 concierge service is also available.
Nearby, downtown Chatham features a walkable town center full of shops and restaurants. Other nearby attractions include the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge and a variety of public golf courses.
“One of [Chatham]’s main attractions is its classic downtown,” said Schwartz. “There are community events such as farmers markets, festivals and outdoor concerts throughout the year, and cultural attractions such as Chatham Community Players theater and the Shakespeare Theater of New Jersey in neighboring Madison.”
