The Consumer Electronics Show, held Jan. 7-10 in Las Vegas, showcased the latest in tech offerings across multiple industries — including the smart home devices that may find their way into the apartments of tomorrow.
Among the show’s highlights are the products and services nominated for the CES Innovation Awards, which showcase outstanding design and engineering, according to the CES website. Here are a few of the top honorees in the Smart Home category, each with potential applications for multifamily:
Palm reading
The Philips Wi-Fi Palm Recognition Smart Deadbolt, also known as the Philips 5000 series smart deadbolt, is equipped with palm recognition technology, allowing for touchless entry by recognizing the palm vein patterns in an approved entrant’s hand, according to Philips.
The deadbolt is manufactured from a zinc alloy, includes integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities and is BHMA/ANSI Grade 2 security certified. It may also be unlocked with a key, a PIN code or the Philips Home Access app. The item is available at retail for $359.99, according to the manufacturer’s website.
Suspended animation
The Samsung Holodisplay floating screen is an interactive digital display designed to appear as though it is hovering in midair. Users can control the display using gestures or voice, and its capabilities include Internet access, timers and control over other SmartThings connected devices in the home.
The Holodisplay is currently a concept product and no retail release has been announced, according to CNET.
Smart water
The Droplet by Hydrific is an ultrasonic device that attaches to a unit’s main water pipe to monitor its water usage and detect leaks. Its machine learning capabilities allow it to recognize water-using fixtures within the unit and identify where water is used. Users can set alerts for leaks or excessive water consumption.
The unit does not require a battery or any invasive installation, according to the manufacturer. The item is available at retail for $199.99.
On-site insight
The eufy Video Smart Lock S3 Pro provides multiple means of unlocking for users, including palm recognition. The integrated video doorbell allows for one-way communication, and the dual power supply system allows for continuous and flexible operation. The device is not yet available at retail.
Clever combination
The CleverCharge Level 2 electronic vehicle charger by Danlaw Inc. makes use of an AI-powered vehicle interface to power a charge and provide a range management system for users’ vehicles. The affiliated CleverCharge IQ app can be used to manage multiple vehicles and households simultaneously, displaying a car’s remaining range in miles.
The device is available in hardwired and 240V outlet models for J1772 or NACS (Tesla) charging ports, according to the manufacturer’s website. The charger will be available in spring 2025, and the cost has not been released.
