Visioned and delivered by Taft Development Group, downtown Clayton, NC, has welcomed Spinning Mill Lofts. With leasing in full swing, residents are flocking to the new standard of private club-like amenities across 60,000 square feet of historic mill space. Taft utilized a HUD-insured, construction to perm, 221(d)4 loan, with a fixed rate of 2.65%. 

The 255-residence development is defined by the combination of new and historic construction and offers two levels of multipurpose space, linked by a monumental staircase, throughout the 120-year-old former Clayton Spinning Company. The fitness center offers functional training equipment, including crossfit and smart mirrors, all in the wash of light streaming through 16-foot historic windows. A pub-space occupies the basement alongside individually secured bike lockers and a bike repair area. 

Al fresco dining areas with fire pit, grills, and a two-story patio add inviting outdoor amenities in the shadow of the historic mill and smokestack. An immense pool deck surrounds a saltwater pool with clubhouse and features an outdoor bar and cabana with daybeds. Once again, the historic mill architecture provides a unique backdrop for the community’s outdoor living areas. 

Indoors, the main lobby features a selection of curated artwork selected by SouthPark Interiors. The program focuses on both the history and modernity of the building, with pieces by Lauren Stern, Momentum Textiles and Wallcovering, Nes Studio Wall Art, Samal Design, and Uncommon Knots Design. The developer and designer worked diligently to recover much of the historic artifacts, which are now on display in a small museum in the basement lobby. Additional amenities include co-working spaces, multiple gathering areas, a coffee bar and café room, as well as a dog run and electric vehicle charging stations. 

The loft and two-bedroom historic mill residences are finished with original hardwood plank flooring, industrial finishes, custom closets, roller blackout shades, integrated USB ports, keyless entry, and smart thermostats. New construction residences—ranging in size from 1 to 3-bedrooms—feature wide plank LVT flooring, custom closets, and designer modern fixtures. Kitchens across all residences include GE appliances, tile backsplashes, and solid black granite countertops; bathrooms feature a mix of tubs and walk-in glass showers, all completed with tiled surrounds. The entire property is covered by managed Wi-Fi, allowing residents to stay connected wherever they go. 

At the recent grand opening, representatives from Taft Development Group and project architecture firms Planworx and RossDeckard highlighted the historic significance of the mill and the integrated design elements of the new construction. Guests explored the project amenities and model residences from guided tours led by Taft Management Group, the leasing and marketing team.
